It is believed that Clan Tartan was created by accident. The weavers manufacturing the cloth in each region would rely on vegetable dyes in that area, to produce a single pattern, which would be made for everyone in that region to wear (www.scotlandmag.com). This patterned cloth became the Clan tartan, as each distinctive pattern was made from the resources from a specific area, representing a certain Clan. Tartan is a source of Scottish pride, a means by which to reflect upon fierce Scottish history. Tartan today is associated with Clans and families all across Scotland (www.scotlandmag.com).
Tartan comes in a large variety of colours and patterns. All feature interlocking horizontal and vertical lines. The earliest fabrics were woven from one or two colours. The connection between fabric, design and colour where a result of the natural resources in that specific region (www.scottish-at-heart.com).
