Throughout the history of the Clan system, the great clans thrived and achieved ultimate power. Some of the great Clans include Mackenzie, MacIntyre, Stewart and Muray, to name a few.

Mackenzie
The Clan of Mackenzie was said to be the 4th most powerful Clan in Scotland, however the most powerful in the north. Their clan territory consisted of the Island of Lewis in the west through to the east coast of Ross. The Mackenzie Clan inhabited two castles. The first castle to be associated with this Clan was Eilean Donan castle, located on Loch Duich in Kintail. Shortly after, the power of the Clan shifted to the east, where they inhabited the castle of Leod. They acted as ‘Royal agents’ for a succession of Scottish kings. Stewart
The Clan of Stewart rose above the others to lead the nation and reign supreme. For three and a half centuries Clan Stewart dominated Scotland and influenced Great Britain as its members became part of the royal family. Murray
The Clan of Murray, descended from a Flemish Knight named Freskin de Moravia, originally settled in the North East of Scotland. One of the most famous members of the Clan was Sir Andrew de Moray, an ally of William Wallace who led the Wars of independence against English rule. As a result of this the Clan gained significance in Scottish history. Over time, the name Murray became the most common territorial name in Scotland. (www.greatscottishclans.com) |
