Location of Lowlands vs. Highlands
|
There was a noticeable difference between the feudal society found in most of Lowland Scotland and the Highland Clans of Scotland. This difference was the society of the Lowlands was built entirely on a hierarchy around the ownership of land. Where the Clans of the Highlands were built solely on relationships (www.scotland.org.uk).
The Highlanders had a reputation for being brave and fierce warriors. Willing to take their own lives in order to do well by the Chief and the Clan. This was the reason the people of the Lowlands viewed the Highlands as a completely different civilization having a different language and culture. The people of the Lowlands feared the Highland Clans. |
